All that Stock Market Jargon ! Help !!

A few days back the friend mentioned here was telling me about how he had started following the stock market and the Sensex and the Nifty and how it had gone down by a certain number of points. I just giggled ’cause I had no idea what he was talkin about. I knew it had something to do with the stock market and that’s all.

So, yesterday I had some free time in hand so I thought I would check it up. And I chanced upon this. It made sense. I could actually understand some of it. I had a little confusion over the difference between Stocks and Shares so I checked it up here and well, I’m still a little confused about that.

I do know what the Nifty and Sensex now so I tried following the current market position here at Sify News.

At 13,221.26, the Sensex is now up by 0.83% or 109.41 points over its previous closing mark. The Nifty has posted a gain of 17.30 points or 0.44% at 3964.50.

From this I do understand that companies listed in Sensex and Nitfy are doin well and have shown gains of 0.83% and 0.44% respectively. But what I don’t understand is what the following mean…

  • What does  “At 13,221” mean?
  • 109.41 points. What do these points stand for?

Yes Bank, which tops the list of gainers from the Bankex, is up by around 8.75% at Rs 120. Axis Bank has posted a gain of 4.8% at Rs 666. Kotak Bank is up nearly 4% at Rs 487.

When they say Axis Bank has posted a gain of 4.8% at Rs. 666 does it mean that each share sells for Rs. 666 and that they have gained by 4.8% ?

I know I haven’t got a single comment on my blog yet but any help on this one would be appreciated.

Thanks. :)
